So, a question I have been asked quite frequently is how do I get my foundation so flawless!
Now there are a few things to note; from A-Z everything is fairly basic and common, I get compliment most when I use DRUGSTORE products and this is not a brag post! Remember, it's not about the most expensive products it's the way you use it. I have wanted to make a video on this for a while, so once I do I will add it to this post later on and update you guys!
The Skin.
My skin is oily all-over, I have pores/blackheads around my nose, chin & forehead and uneven skin texture, meaning either congested skin, pimples that are under the skin and brewing and ones I have picked at (when will I ever learn!)
The Products.
- Benefit Porefessional Primer
- MAC Studio Fix Fluid/ Maybelline FIT ME/ L'Oreal Lumi Magique Foundation
- Rimmel Stay Matte Powder in Translucent
- Benefit Hoola Bronzer/ Too Faced Cocoa Contour Kit in Medium Cocoa
- Too Faced Milk Chocolate Soleil
- Essence Satin Blush (No longer available)
- MAC Soft & Gentle Highlighter
- Australis Finishing Spritz Setting Spray
The Tools.
For Primer - usually hands/fingertips
For Foundation - rounded stippling foundation brush
For Powder - round fluffy powder brush
For Contour - rounded flater contour brush
For Blush - angled brush
For Highlighter - tapered brush
The How.
1. After applying my primer with my hands/fingertips (generally mixed together and then rubbed in - not too harshly) I grab whichever foundation I feel like wearing that day, so for fuller coverage I obviously reach for the MAC, if I want something light I reach for L'Oreal and if I want something in the middle, well hello FIT ME!
2. What I see a lot of beauty influencers do is buff the foundation into their skin, which for me doesn't really work, I feel like it moves the foundation off my face, so I use the same motion as a beauty blender. In some areas, like under eyes or around my brows I will swipe so that there will be makeup in that area, but for the rest of my face I stipple!
See - so far really basic! Easy to do!
3. The powder I apply pretty normally, though in some areas I press instead of brushing it on. For instance, around my cheeks & forehead I will press the powder in so when it comes to bronzing/contouring there is no patchiness.
4. When I contour, my trick is to buff it in while moving up and down so it is more natural. Just don't start low otherwise it will look muddy and not enhance your features!
Around the forehead I take whatever is left on the brush and buff it in about 1inch from my hairline and work upwards.
If I feel like contouring the nose, I use the same brush, and after doing my forehead, literally buff some of it on the sides of my nose. If it's too intense I go over it with my powder.
PRO TIP: If you do have intense bronzer/contour, just clean up with your powder and a sharp edge brush for about 10-15 seconds and wipe it off with your brush!
5. For bronzing (my fave), I buff pretty lightly and build to the coverage I want, if I want intense bronze I will do it for maybe 40 seconds, but if it's just everyday maybe about 5-10 seconds, and again I will be moving my brush up and down whilst doing this. I always take my bronzer down and around my neck area just to tie everything in together!
6. There is no real secret to blush - but I tend to focus on the fronts of my cheeks, as if it goes to far past the middle of my eye I look a bit like a drag queen. (I will try to make a blog post about face shapes and working with them to enhance your features the best)
7. Highlighter - another fave! With my brush I just go HAM! From the tip of my cheek all the way around to the tip of my brow, like a weird hook shape, this is where the true buffing comes in - I feel that for most highlighter products, they become more prominent the more your buff.
I've also really liked applying my highlight just on the outer edge of my lower lash line and towards my temple and between my hairline and tip of my brow. It looks really natural for me!
8. Last but not least, the spray that makes it all happen. Some people believe setting spray is just a marketing product and doesn't actually work - well to those people I say, you're wrong! Setting sprays are designed to set your powders, morph them together to create a very seamless look and the obvious - so it wears all night long! This setting spray has really shocked me in the best way possible. I actually find that I prefer it over my IT Cosmetics setting spray, but this comes down to personal preference!
I just want to add a disclaimer with you go; this is how I do my makeup, by no means do I think this is the only way to perfect and flawless foundation but it works for me. If you have time, go through all the steps and see what does and doesn't work for you because not everything will work on everyones skin type! If you do try some of the steps, let me know how you go - I would love to hear about it!
Now that I finished my whole process it actually looks more complicated, but I promise you it's not! If you would like to see a video on my flawless foundation let me know in the comments below!
